Barcelona Plan B (A cartographic opportunity) Exhibition

Barcelona Plan B (Una oprtunidad cartográfica)

The first exhibition that opens the art and contemporary creation center Chiquita Room is the group show Barcelona Plan B (A cartographic opportunity), which immerses us in the enormous power of transmission of maps to imagine other possible cartographies of this city.

Working with maps is to draw a relationship between truth and lie, and choosing a projection or a scale is already from the beginning an ideological positioning that conditions the reading. With a deep interest in recovering the idea of a new beginning, of starting from scratch, the exhibition proposes the possibility of inventing from art other models of the city. Based on the map of the Barcelona on which Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer projected the Plan de l’Eixample of the city, drawn on this occasion by the French-Catalan artist Juli Martí Casals and published by Chiquita Ediciones, the publishing house invites twenty artists to imagine another city as a way of understanding and rethinking the one we have, the one we want, the one we dream of. The proposal is to draw other Barcelonas to assimilate the city that is and was or could have been, discovering where it becomes a reflection of itself. A century and a half later, Plan B proposes to re-establish the moment when Barcelona becomes a puzzle, when the streets, the buildings and the people vie to become one of its pieces and the city acquires its contemporary character. This panoramic and omniscient vision allows us to imagine and understand another (im)possible city.
