sssssh #02 – Bárbara Sánchez Barroso Screening

This session with films by Bárbara Sánchez Barroso includes the three films that are part of the installation The Holobiont That Therefore I Am (2022) and The Odyssey (2017). Through her films, Bárbara Sánchez Barroso approaches the political dimension of the personal and the vulnerable, as well as in the power of narrative and stories, in an attempt to connect with otherness through the camera and from care.

With the presence of the artist.

The Odyssey (2017, 17 minutes)

Based on a childhood memory and a reworking of the myth of Odysseus, The Odyssey recounts the sea voyage of a character who is on a quest to find a place supposedly linked to her origins: a specific cave on a particular island. But rather than a geographic landmark, it turns out to be a place of the mind, an archetype that functions as a symbolic and metaphorical representation of various concepts: the space of fiction, the unconscious, the mythical notion of origin, and even intrauterine life. The visual narrative is accompanied by a first-person voice over recounting the childhood memory.

Knots we knot (2021, 8 minutes) – with Adriana Vila Guevara

Botanical dream (2022, 5: 41 minutes)

The way my mother talked to plants (2022, 11:44 minutes)

Using The animal that thefore I am by Derrida to articulate how to open an actual dialogue on the basis of a mode of being-with, otherness and agency, the installation is part of a reflection process on the topics of a research on coexistence, more-than-human worlds and politics of care.

In the work Botanical dream, shot in a botanical garden, where we witness a dream, but we are not sure whose dream it is. Maybe the plants of the garden are dreaming of transforming, trespassing those glass walls, and becoming a rainforest? In The way my mother talked to plants the artist has filmed her mother at home and with friends, (those being human and non-human), to reflect on care between human and nature. From coexistence between Bárbara Sánchez Barroso and Adriana Vila Guevara and the environment, they create Knots we knot, a film of direct yet poetic language, where the elements of the environment, reveal their condition of symbiosis. The images dialogue with fragments of the readings that the artists had previously shared in order to reflect on this symbiotic condition of beings.

The film Knots we knot will be shown as an installation during the Loop Festival at the Centre excursionista de Catalunya
