El jabón, etcétera Exhibition

Drawing inspiration from Francis Ponge’s book Le Savon, this exhibition brings a diverse group of artists together around a simple object that also has so many layers to it. Soap, that common personal item that appears so insignificant, becomes a focal point for addressing questions about the body, material, care, desire, transformation and our everyday rituals, but also about grief, migration, power and war.

On display simultaneously in the two Chiquita Room galleries in Barcelona and Brussels, this exhibition establishes a dialogue between the two spaces, bringing to light a range of shared interests and a surprising affinity in sensibilities among this broad roster of artists. Through different approaches and languages, the pieces in this exhibit expand upon and transcend the notion of soap, presenting it as an artistic material, a symbol, memory and an object of reflection. It invites you to take a step back and contemplate this thing that forms part of our mundane intimacies and, for that very reason, often goes unnoticed.
